Unlike service animals, which are trained to perform specific tasks for individuals with disabilities, an emotional support animal (ESA) provides comfort through companionship. ESAs do not require specialized training and can be any domesticated animal. Their primary role is to alleviate symptoms associated with a mental or emotional condition as part of a treatment plan overseen by a licensed mental health professional (LMHP).
