A Dog Bill of Sale is a legal document that records the sale of a dog or puppy and transfers ownership from the seller to the buyer. While most states don't require a Bill of Sale to own a pet, a written agreement protects buyer and seller, satisfies kennel club registration requirements, and creates a clear record of price, health disclosures, and any conditions of sale.

What a Dog Bill of Sale should include?

A complete Dog Bill of Sale captures the full legal names and addresses of buyer and seller, the dog's identifying details (breed, sex, color, date of birth, microchip or tattoo number, AKC/UKC or other registry number if applicable, sire and dam if from a pedigreed line), the agreed sale price (or "gift" if no money changes hands), the date of sale, payment method, current health and vaccination status, any disclosures about known conditions, health guarantee terms (if offered), and the signatures of both parties. State pet sale laws — particularly in California, Florida, Illinois, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Virginia — impose additional disclosure and remedy requirements ("puppy lemon laws") that may apply on top of the Bill of Sale. Buyers should review breeder contracts carefully and confirm that registration papers and microchip records are properly transferred.
