What is Form 956?
Form 956 is an official document issued by the Australian Department of Home Affairs used to appoint or withdraw a registered migration agent, legal practitioner, or exempt person to assist with immigration matters. It authorizes the appointed representative to provide immigration advice and receive correspondence from the Department on behalf of the client.
Who Can Be Appointed Using This Form?
- Registered Migration Agents - must be registered with the Office of the Migration Agents Registration Authority (OMARA).
- Legal Practitioners - lawyers holding an Australian practising certificate under state or territory law.
- Exempt Persons - including close family members, members of parliament or their staff, sponsors, nominators, and government officials acting in their official capacity. (Note: exempt persons must not charge a fee.)
When to Use Form 956
Use Form 956 when:
- Appointing a migration agent, lawyer, or exempt person to represent you in a visa application, cancellation, or sponsorship matter.
- Notifying the Department that your representative’s appointment has ended.

- Full name, contact, and registration details of the representative.
- Client information, including name, visa subclass, and application status.
- Declaration and signatures from both the client and representative.
Where to Submit Form 956
The completed form must be sent to the Department of Home Affairs office handling your visa or immigration matter. You may also submit it online if directed by your representative or DHA.
Important Notes
- Only one representative can be appointed for each matter.
- If you only wish to authorize someone to receive correspondence (not provide immigration advice), use Form 956A instead.
- Immigration assistance does not include basic help such as translating or passing information without commentary.
