Form MN1 is the UK Home Office application form for registering a child under 18 as a British citizen. Unlike naturalisation (Form AN, for adults), registration is the route for children who either have a statutory entitlement to British citizenship (they meet the requirements set out in the British Nationality Act 1981) or whose parents apply for citizenship at the Home Secretary's discretion. Successful registration under MN1 leads to a British citizenship certificate, which the child then uses to apply for a British passport.
Common routes covered by MN1 include: a child born in the UK on or after 1 January 1983 whose parent became a British citizen or settled in the UK after the birth; a child born outside the UK to a British citizen parent by descent, subject to residence conditions; a child of a British Overseas Territories citizen; a child adopted by a British citizen abroad in specified circumstances; a stateless child; and various discretionary routes where the Home Secretary considers registration appropriate. Each route has its own eligibility rules, which the current Home Office guidance explains in detail.
The child's full birth certificate (showing both parents); the parents' passports, birth certificates, or naturalisation certificates (whichever evidences the parent's British citizenship or settled status); evidence of the parent's presence and status in the UK for the required period; two passport-style photos of the child; two adult referees who have known the child for at least three years and who complete the referee section; the current application fee (which changes periodically); and any additional documents specific to the child's route to registration.
Applications are made online through the UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) portal or by post using the paper MN1 form. Biometrics (fingerprints and a digital photo) are collected at a UKVI service point or by using the UK Immigration: ID Check app for eligible applicants. Processing typically takes up to six months, though timing depends on the route and the completeness of supporting documents. After approval, the child attends a citizenship ceremony (usually if aged 10 or over) to receive the certificate.
