Form 2042 is the main income tax return in France. The 2025 edition covers income received in 2025. It collects your civil status, address, household situation, income by category, and the deductions, tax reductions and credits you claim. It also asks whether this is your first return and for your tax numbers.
Every French tax household files one return. Married couples and civil partners file jointly, with two declarants on the form. Additional income and deductions are reported on the supplementary forms 2042 C and 2042 C PRO and on annexes such as 2044, 2047, 2074 and 2086.
Your tax number and your spouse's, your last tax notice, details of salaries, pensions and other income, information on dependants, and proof of expenses that give rise to deductions, reductions or credits.
Online filing has been mandatory for all households since 2019. Paper is accepted only if your main home has no internet access or you cannot file online. For 2025 income, the 2026 online deadlines were 21 May, 28 May or 4 June 2026 depending on your department, and the paper deadline was 19 May 2026. Late filing leads to a surcharge (10% without a formal notice, higher afterwards) plus interest of 0.20% per month.
