Form AD01 is the Companies House form used to change a UK limited company's registered office address, the official address where legal documents and correspondence are sent. It applies to companies only. Limited liability partnerships use the separate LL AD01 form instead. Filing AD01 is free, whether you submit it online through WebFiling or by post.
The address must be one where a document sent by hand or post would reasonably be expected to reach someone acting on behalf of the company, and where a person can get acknowledgement that a document was delivered. It must also stay within the same UK jurisdiction the company is registered in, so an England and Wales company needs an address in England or Wales, a Welsh company needs one in Wales, and Scottish or Northern Irish companies need an address in their own jurisdiction. Home addresses are allowed but appear permanently on the public register.
The form can be authenticated by a director, secretary, person authorised under the Companies Act 2006, or by an office holder such as a liquidator, administrator, or receiver, depending on the company's circumstances. Only a printed name is needed, not a signature. Online filing through WebFiling is usually processed within a day, while paper filings take longer since they have to be received and keyed in manually.
The change isn't legally effective until Companies House registers the notice, not from the date you file it. For 14 days after registration, documents can still be validly served on the company at its previous registered office, so it's worth arranging mail forwarding during that window. Companies House must be notified of a change within 14 days of it happening, and all details on the form, including the address, appear on the public record.
