Form AN is the Home Office application used by adults who want to naturalise as British citizens under the British Nationality Act 1981. It's a nationality application, not an immigration application, so it doesn't grant or vary any leave to remain. Naturalisation is available once you've already secured settled status in the UK, most commonly Indefinite Leave to Remain or settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme.
You must be 18 or over and hold settled status in the UK. Most applicants need 5 years of legal residence before applying, with no more than 90 days spent outside the UK in the 12 months before applying and limited absences over the full 5 years. If you're married to, or in a civil partnership with, a British citizen, the residence requirement drops to 3 years. You'll also need to meet the good character requirement and pass the Life in the UK test and an English language requirement, unless you're exempt.
Naturalisation is discretionary. Even if you meet all the published eligibility criteria, the Home Office retains the power to refuse an application, and there's no right of appeal against a refusal, though a formal reconsideration can be requested on Form NR for a fee. The Home Office runs background checks that go beyond your personal conduct, covering immigration compliance, tax records, and employment history, so inconsistencies in any of these can prompt further questions and delay a decision.
Once approved, you'll be invited to a citizenship ceremony, where you take an oath and pledge before officially becoming a British citizen. There's a separate ceremony fee on top of the application fee. You can apply for a British passport once you've completed the ceremony and hold your certificate of naturalisation. Check GOV.UK for the current application and ceremony fees before you apply, since Home Office fees change periodically.
