Form PA1P is the application used in England and Wales to apply for a grant of probate when someone has died leaving a valid will. The named executors are the applicants, though a beneficiary can apply if no executor is willing or able to act. The resulting grant of probate is the document banks, HM Land Registry, and other institutions ask to see before releasing the deceased's assets or transferring property.
The estate's Inheritance Tax position has to be settled first. For most excepted estates, the relevant figures now go directly into the PA1P or PA1A application itself rather than a separate IHT205 form. If the estate is non-excepted, a full IHT400 account must be submitted to HMRC first, and you'll need HMRC's reference or acknowledgement before applying for probate, since applying too early means the Probate Registry can't match your application to your tax record.
You'll need the original will and any codicils, the original death certificate, and details of the executors applying. Instead of the old sworn oath, PA1P now uses a statement of truth, a series of declarations confirming the information given is accurate and that you'll administer the estate according to the law. Making a false statement here is a criminal offence, so it's worth checking every detail against the will and death certificate carefully before signing.
Most applications are made online through the government's probate service, though a paper version can be posted to a probate registry instead. The court fee is £526 for estates over £5,000, with no fee for estates below that, following the increase from £300 that took effect on 13 July 2026. Extra sealed copies of the grant, useful since most institutions want to see their own copy, now cost £2 each rather than the previous £16.
