Form V70 is the DVLA application to change your vehicle tax. You can use it if your vehicle is currently taxed and you move from one paying tax class to another, or if certain changes to the vehicle affect the rate of duty you pay, such as a change in cylinder capacity, the revenue weight of a heavy goods vehicle or the number of seats on a bus.
You normally need the V5C registration certificate (log book), updated to show any changes made to the vehicle. If you do not have one, you complete an application for a vehicle registration certificate, Form V62, which carries a fee. Depending on the change, you may also need evidence of an engine size or fuel type change, a valid MOT or goods vehicle test certificate, a plating or design weight certificate, or insurance details for vehicles registered in Northern Ireland.
You may need to pay extra duty. The form explains it as the difference between what was paid for the current tax and the cost of the new tax, divided by the period of the current tax (12 or 6 months), multiplied by the number of months the new tax is to run. DVLA publishes an example calculation at www.gov.uk/changevehicletax.
The form states that vehicle tax can only be changed through DVLA in Swansea and that it should not be taken to a Post Office branch. Because DVLA services and addresses change over time, check www.gov.uk/changevehicletax for the current process before you send it.
