What is a TD1 form?
The TD1 form is Canada’s Personal Tax Credits Return. It tells your employer how much income tax to withhold from your pay based on your eligibility for various tax credits. Unlike your yearly tax return (T1), the TD1 isn’t filed with the CRA, it stays with your employer or pension provider as part of payroll records.
Why is the TD1 important?
Filling in the TD1 ensures that the right amount of tax is deducted from your income throughout the year. If you don’t complete one, your employer will only apply the basic personal amount, which could leave you owing tax when you file your T1. Conversely, if you qualify for additional credits and don’t claim them on your TD1, you might overpay tax during the year.
