Who needs to file I-539?

B-1/B-2 visitors seeking to extend their stay.
F-1 or M-1 students applying for reinstatement.
J-1 exchange visitors changing status.
Dependents of H, L, O, or other visa holders applying for extension/change of status.

When should I file I-539?
At least 45 days before your current I-94 expiration date or as soon as you decide to extend/change status.

What evidence is required?

Copy of current I-94 record.
Proof of valid passport.
Evidence supporting extension or change request (such as enrollment letters, financial records, or visitor justification).
For dependents: proof of relationship to the principal visa holder.

What happens after filing?

USCIS issues a receipt notice.
A biometrics appointment may be required.
USCIS will review your application and issue a decision by mail.
