Form 1040-X is the Amended U.S. Individual Income Tax Return used to correct a previously filed Form 1040, 1040-SR, or 1040-NR. It's how taxpayers update income, deductions, credits, filing status, or dependents after the original return has been submitted. Form 1040-X is required whenever you discover an error or omission that changes your tax liability — whether it increases your refund or your balance due.
File Form 1040-X within three years from the date you filed the original return or within two years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. To claim a refund, the three-year window is strict. Do not file 1040-X simply to fix math errors — the IRS corrects those automatically. File it when income, credits, deductions, filing status, or dependents need to change.
Have a copy of your original return, the new or corrected information that changes the return (W-2s, 1099s, supporting schedules, dependent details), and any related forms or schedules affected by the change (Schedule A, Schedule C, Form 8962, and so on). Form 1040-X uses a three-column format: Column A shows the original figures, Column B shows the net change, and Column C shows the corrected figures.
The IRS now accepts e-filed Form 1040-X for tax years 2019 and later through most major tax software. Paper filing is also accepted — mail to the IRS service center listed in the Form 1040-X instructions based on your state. Processing typically takes 8 to 12 weeks. Track your amendment status using the IRS 'Where's My Amended Return?' tool about three weeks after filing.
